"Learn how to read your dog" is a common phrase in Scent Work. This relates to learning what your dog looks like when they are working odor. However, it is also essential that we have a general understanding of canine body language! In asking our dogs to hunt, we must understand what the dog is saying throughout the entirety of the search.
This is especially important if you are an instructor. We are building value in something (the hide) and then tasking the dog to find that thing. Are you certain you know when a dog is telling you to stay away from them or their hide? Are you aware of how you could potentially place a dog into conflict with how you move or act within a search area? How to identify if a dog has "stranger danger" and how to deescalate the situation? Whether a canine client is starting to fall apart and needs you to advocate on their behalf, by pulling them from the search to make an appropriate adjustment? We discuss of this, and much more, in this webinar.
