You are getting ready for a Scent Work practice session with your dog. Immediately, you begin bringing in lots of items for your search area. Chairs. Buckets. Stuff. You run your dog, and notice that they are checking all the items, but are not really searching the entire space. What about the corners? What about the walls? A dread falls over you...is there a hole in your training?! We will give you some suggestions in this webinar about how you can avoid the "just stuff" trap.
WEBINAR DETAILS
As humans, it is very easy for us to fall into patterns when we are doing anything. The same is true in how we design and run our Scent Work practice sessions. This can be problematic however, as our dogs are extremely in-tune to patterns.
Always place a hide on a certain item? Your dog will assume the hide will always be there. Go to a trial and that item is not there? It could be a problem.
Another larger problem is when the dog associates the game with "stuff" as opposed to finding the source of the odor...no matter where it is. This results in a dog searching stuff instead of simply following their nose.
In this webinar, we will go over some suggestions on how you can avoid these issues, and help your dog understand the true purpose of this game.

SHOULD YOU TAKE THE WEBINAR
Is your dog object-obsessed when it comes to Scent Work? They are not alone! In this webinar, we will discuss how easy it is to fall into this trap and ways to help our dogs understand the broader meaning of the Scent Work game: find the source of the odor no matter where it is...and that may NOT necessarily be with "stuff".
Are you an instructor? Ensure that you are not baking in "object obsession" into your lesson plans and instead develop hunters who will be true to odor, not just simply assume the hide will always be with "stuff".
